CANON & CANON POINT: Dragon Age 2 / Dragon Age Inquisiton, after the formation of the Inquisition and during his aiding of Kirkwall (Year 9:42 Dragon).
CANON INFORMATION: Wiki link, including all events of Dragon Age 2 and Inquisition

Canon notes: Sebastian's Hawke was a Garrett Hawke (male) and befriended him, pushing him closer to the Chantry. Hawke in his canon was a "blue" Hawke- his personality was more diplomatic, though he had a sense of humor. Anders was killed in his canon, and Sebastian took the throne at Starkhaven. Sebastian's quest in Inquisition was "Aiding Kirkwall".

PERSONALITY:
"My family put me in the Chantry because I was giving them a bad name. It was the best thing that ever happened to me. I found peace. I found a purpose. Before I came here, I used to be out to all hours, drinking and whoring. I didn't believe in anything except my own pleasure."

Sebastian was a very, very different person before he was sent off to the Chantry. In his teens, Sebastian was a bit of a thorn in his family's side. He was a man of vices, who thought only of himself, whose frequent trips out drinking and whoring were a shame to the royal family and a danger of creating bastards to muddy the line of succession.

Even still, at a young age, Sebastian showed hints of the man he would become. His grandfather, a pious man who longed to devote his life to the Chantry, was someone that Sebastian was closer to than he was with his own parents. Sebastian longed to live up to his grandfather's expectations of him, to be a worthy heir to him. Sebastian used what little discipline he had to practice his archery every morning, in the hopes of making himself worthy of inheriting his grandfather's bow.

Even still, he was never groomed for the throne. Sebastian was basically the family embarrassment.

"You were given to the Circle. I was given to the Chantry. Hawke was driven away from home by the Darkspawn. None of us are free."

Being given to the Chantry and finally accepting his faith was a huge turning point for Sebastian. Where his life was in disarray before, he found order and purpose. As he said, his family "had the heir and the spare" and as the youngest of three, Sebastian has no purpose in his life before he was given over. At first, the Chantry was almost like a prison for him, before he would later regard it as the best thing that happened to him.

"He's a merciful lord. He could have destroyed our world when we failed Him, but instead He gave us a chance at redemption. Should we not be joyful?"

Sebastian is a very deeply zealous man. He believes almost blindly in the teachings of the Chantry- it's a flaw of his that's also a strength. However, he's not completely blind to things that would bring more people into the fold, as it were.

However, Sebastian is religious to a fault. He tells Merrill that he feels the elvhen gods are just facets of the Maker- completely disregarding her own culture and trying to force her to assimilate into the Chantry. He doesn't do this out of spite or malice, he simply wants to bring more people in to know the divine grace that has changed his life for the better. Sebastian truly loves the Maker and Andraste, and he feels that everyone can use faith to better themselves.

"Isabela: It's been years, and not once have you tried to get me to repent or turn to the Maker.
Sebastian: Preaching seldom works, Isabela. To change a person's heart, one has to lead by example."

Sebastian doesn't live his life completely sanctimoniously. He is definitely a man who practices what he preaches- and he doesn't preach too often. What he does preach are things like love, acceptance, and forgiveness. To Fenris, he offers that the Maker can forgive him for murdering people under the command of Darnarius, that even Fenris can be redeemed. Sebastian truly believes in almost endless divine grace, and he offers this forgiveness to his friends, in the hopes that they, too, will lead a better life like he has. Sebastian doesn't offer them pithy words, he truly does try to lead as virtuous a life as he can.

Sebastian is deeply compassionate, even toward people that he doesn't completely agree with. With Aveline, for example, he added her deceased husband's name to the list of Templars that died in service, so his name will be read during the Chant of Remembrance at the Chantry. Sebastian never personally met the man, and he and Aveline often butted heads, but he did it because he knew it was the right thing to do.

"You're the one who taught me that it is the ends that matter, not the steps you take to get there. I swear to you, I will come back and find your precious Anders. I will teach him what true justice is!"

There is, however, one person that Sebastian finds himself completely opposed to. Anders is a man that Sebastian at first believed was a troubled man, one who needed a bit of guidance. In Act 2, he offered Anders understanding, as much as he could. But the truth of it is that Anders and Sebastian are completely opposing forces- where Anders is chaos, Sebastian is order. Some people think that Fenris is the foil to Anders, but I honestly feel that Sebastian fills that role better. Sebastian is a member of the Institution that Anders struggles against, and it is Sebastian who suffers personally for Anders's crime of destroying the Chantry.

When Anders destroys the Chantry, he kills the men and women that Sebastian grew up with, especially his surrogate mother, Elthina. Sebastian has a vengeful streak- it's his most obvious flaw- and in the end you cannot keep both Anders and Sebastian- Anders must die for Sebastian to stay, else he leaves and vows revenge.

At the end of his canon, Sebastian has definitely become a man for who the end justifies the means, especially when it comes to getting revenge. If he is rivaled by Hawke and Anders lives, Sebastian leads a siege on Kirkwall simply to capture Anders and bring him to justice. He thinks not of the actual siege of the city- only that capturing Anders and making him pay for his crimes is his ultimate goal.

This Sebastian is a slightly different sort of man, but that detail is important for justifying his court below. This Sebastian is a little more compassionate. However, if Anders does appear, Sebastian will bring whatever force he can to bear against him.

COURT ALLIANCE & REASONING:
Seelie. Sebastian's character is positioned as a member of The Institution, as it were, in Thedas. Especially in Dragon Age 2, Sebastian shows himself to be lawful/order aligned to a fault. He believes almost blindly in the Chantry, and is a very good foil to the chaotic-aligned Anders.

Sebastian is almost order to a fault- where he leans toward vengeance for being wronged. This aligns very nicely with the seelie tendency to take a hard stance against crime/wrongdoing. Even the less savory parts of the seelie court- law and order to a fault of impartial justice and black and white right/wrong suit Sebastian because those are facets of his own personality. If I were to pick an alignment for Sebastian, it would be Lawful Neutral, which puts him right in the thick of law and order to a fault, to destroy chaos by any means necessary.

ABILITIES:
Aside from a single ability in-game that is a "guardian angel" mechanic to show how deep his faith is, Sebastian has no magical abilities. He is a highly skilled archer, and all of his in-game skills reflect this, giving him bonus damage for chains of shots and guaranteed critical strikes.

For the purposes of the game, I will be keeping the following skill:

Guardian Angel - Sebastian creates an ethereal personal decoy that keeps enemies occupied for a short time while he escapes in stealth.

From the Archery talent tree, he also will be able to use explosive arrows, arrowd that disorient, and ones that will instantly kill weaker enemies.

INVENTORY:
Companion Armor
The Starkhaven Longbow
Quiver and arrows
A copy of The Chant of Light

Transfigurations 12:1-12:6

O Maker, hear my cry:
Guide me through the blackest nights
Steel my heart against the temptations of the wicked
Make me to rest in the warmest places.

O Creator, see me kneel:
For I walk only where You would bid me
Stand only in places You have blessed
Sing only the words You place in my throat

My Maker, know my heart
Take from me a life of sorrow
Lift me from a world of pain
Judge me worthy of Your endless pride

My Creator, judge me whole:
Find me well within Your grace
Touch me with fire that I be cleansed
Tell me I have sung to Your approval

O Maker, hear my cry:
Seat me by Your side in death
Make me one within Your glory
And let the world once more see Your favor

For You are the fire at the heart of the world
And comfort is only Yours to give.
